A Touch of Magic

Khalia stands between the turquoise waters and tropical forest of Heart Coast, holding gentle yellow and turquoise magic in her open hands.
My magic isn't about being powerful. It's about healing, helping and caring for the living things around me—and sometimes making something beautiful simply because I can. 💛

Hello!

So, you're keen to learn about my magic.

Well, I'm more than happy to tell you.

Though, it will be just a taste for now. Later I will explain everything in greater detail.

So, let's get into it!

You need to know something before I start telling you about my spells.

I'm not an all-powerful mage.

I can't heal everything, control everything or wave my hand and make every problem disappear. If that's the sort of magic you were expecting, I'm afraid I'm going to be rather disappointing.

My magic is gentle.

Most of it is about healing, restoring, calming, helping and caring for the living things around me. Even the magic I use to travel tends to work with the world rather than trying to overpower it.

That's important to me.

I don't want enormous power. I think it would frighten me to be honest.

I only want my magic to make a difference when something needs my help.

The Fundamentals of My Magic

I kneel on the sands of Heart Coast with a glowing yellow heart above my palm, surrounded by turquoise water, tropical forest and colourful flowers.
My magic can do some rather wonderful things, but it all comes from the same place. Let me show you how it works

There are a few things I've learned about how my magic works.

First, it needs intention. I need to know what I'm trying to accomplish and deliberately direct my magic towards it.

It also needs concentration.

Some spells have become so familiar that using them feels almost instinctive. Others require considerably more focus, particularly when what I'm trying to do is difficult.

My magic has limits, too.

I can't heal every injury. I can't bring something back from the dead. I can't erase someone's memories or simply remove everything they're feeling. I can't control another creature's mind. And despite having a few spells involving water, I certainly don't command the ocean.

Then there's the cost.

Using a little magic may barely affect me at all. Difficult spells, prolonged use or trying to accomplish too much can leave me physically exhausted, mentally drained or emotionally overwhelmed.

I've discovered a fairly simple rule:

The more I ask of my magic, the more it asks of me.

Practice helps. I've become much better at controlling my abilities, and I'm still improving.

But becoming more skilled doesn't make me limitless.

It simply means I'm learning to use what I have more wisely.

My Magical Disciplines

I've come to think of my magic as belonging to three disciplines.

Healing Spells are the magic I use to heal, restore and ease suffering.

Kindred Spells help me connect with living creatures and the natural world around me.

Travel Spells help me move through the waters, forests and elevated regions of Heart Coast.

Within those disciplines are the individual spells I've learned so far.

Healing Spells

I sit beside an exhausted fox in the forest of Heart Coast, using the gentle yellow energy of Vital Current to help restore its depleted strength.
Sometimes there isn't a wound to mend. Sometimes a tired little body simply needs some of its strength back. That's when I use Vital Current.

Vital Current

Vital Current helps restore depleted physical reserves. I use it for exhaustion, dehydration, weakness and very low energy. It can help a body recover, but it can't replace things the body genuinely needs, such as water, food and proper rest.

Gentle Mend

Gentle Mend is my physical healing and cleansing spell. I use it for minor wounds such as cuts, scrapes, bruises, punctures, blisters, minor burns and skin tears. Its cleansing ability can also help me remove or reduce poisons and venom, although more serious injuries and toxins are much harder for me to treat.

Heart's Reprieve

Some wounds aren't physical. Heart's Reprieve lets me ease emotional and mental suffering such as anxiety, stress, grief, guilt, fear and emotional pain. I can't erase someone's memories or make their problems disappear. Sometimes I can simply make what they're carrying a little easier to bear.

Kindred Spells

Kindred Soul

Kindred Soul allows me to form a gentle emotional connection with an animal or fantasy creature. I can sense something of what it's feeling and gently calm fear, panic, anger or aggression. I can't control its mind or make it obey me. I simply try to help it understand that I mean it no harm.

Very useful when the thing I'm trying to help has particularly large teeth.

Call of the Wild

This one isn't a spell I cast. It's something I sense, and even feel.

I can sense when a creature is suffering, even when I can’t see it. The stronger its pain or distress, and the closer it is, the more clearly I feel it. Plants and trees are quieter, though I can sometimes sense when a whole area is suffering. It isn’t something I cast. It’s simply part of me.

Travel Spells

I explore the clear turquoise waters of Heart Coast, breathing underwater with Turquoise Breath as I admire colourful coral and marine life.
There’s something rather wonderful about being able to breathe down here. It means I can take my time and appreciate just how beautiful life beneath the water really is.

Turquoise Breath

When I’m underwater, Turquoise Breath lets me breathe as naturally as I do on land by drawing the air I need from the water itself. There’s no time limit, so I can stay beneath the surface for as long as I like—which makes exploring the waters of Heart Coast considerably easier.

Saline Steps

Saline Steps allows me to walk across the surface of water, with my magic creating support beneath my feet as I move. Calm water is fairly easy now. Rough seas require considerably more concentration.

And considerably better balance.

Creation Spells

Love's Creation

Yes, I named this one after myself.

I'm allowed one. 💛

Love's Creation lets me shape water into temporary creations. I make hearts and flowers quite often, but I can also create animals, little creatures and more complicated shapes. I can even make them move, although they aren't actually alive. When I release the spell, my creation simply returns to ordinary water.

I'm Still Learning

These are the spells I've learned well enough to tell you about.

So far.

My magic is something I'm still discovering, and I don't think I've reached the end of what I can learn. I'm experimenting with new spells and gradually finding new ways to use the abilities I already have.

I'm also working on defensive and offensive  spells.

I don't want magic designed simply to hurt things. That's not who I am. But if if need arises I would much rather be prepared.

Heart Coast is beautiful, but not harmless. There are times when healing something, calming it or quietly getting out of its way might not be enough.

So I'm trying to learn ways to protect myself without causing unnecessary harm.

When I master something new, I'll add it here.

Which means you may want to come back occasionally and see what I've learned.

And, apparently, I should also be working on a Decisive Spell.

I'm still deciding about that one.

Well, that's it for now.

I hope you understand my magic a little better. There’s still plenty for me to discover myself, but it was nice to share what I know with you.

See you again soon.
